Private Utility Indicators

< 1 min read

At UDig NY, in addition to having public utilities marked out, we recommended taking unmarked utilities, and privates services, into account. This can be done by looking for indicators on your property that a private service exists underground.

What are some indicators that you may have private services?

  • Invisible Fence
  • Outdoor Lamp Post
  • Shed or Detached Garage
  • Pool or Hot Tub
  • Electric Transformer and/or Meter

The best practice for identifying private services is to contact and hire a private locating company to identify and mark these services for you. These companies have resources to determine the location of private lines. They will also provide you with a paint and flags much like the 811 process and public utilities. To learn more about private utilities, visit this web page.

If you have any questions, contact your local Field Representative.
