Private vs. Public Lines

Starting your projectPrivate utility lines

Taking the time to submit a location request online, or by calling 811 before you dig, is an important step in the process – but it is not the only one. Utility companies do not always identify private utility lines, such as underground wires to a lamp post or pool filter.

Additional examples not covered include:

  • Irrigation & Sprinkler
  • Propane Tanks & Lines
  • Septic Tank & Leach Lines
  • Sump Pump
  • Generators On-Site
  • Invisible Dog Fence
  • Water Services
  • Sewer Laterals
  • Some Electric Lines Both Secondary to the Home & Landscape

Understanding the difference Private utility lines

These carry on beyond the property line and are the responsibility of the home/property owner.
The utility operator may not mark these lines before a digging project.

Public utility lines

These are maintained and marked by the utility operator, typically marked up to the property line. Gas lines will be marked to where it enters the home.
